Why mobile and desktop rankings can be different

Device-specific results are normal. Here is what to look for when positions do not match.

Different screens, different search pages

Search engines often adapt results to device context. Mobile results may show more condensed layouts, different local signals, different special result elements and pages that perform better on small screens.

That means a desktop position is useful, but it does not always describe what a mobile searcher sees.

What to compare

Compare the ranking URL, not only the position. If mobile shows a different page from the same domain, the search engine may prefer a more mobile-friendly or intent-specific page.

Also compare missing rankings. A page that ranks on desktop but not mobile can point to technical, content or local relevance issues.

When to choose both devices

Check both devices when mobile traffic matters, when local SEO matters, or when reporting to a client. If you only need a quick baseline, start with the device that best matches the target audience.
